The Melbourne Bionics Company: Advancing Sports Recovery and Compression Therapy Through Innovation
Bailey Thomas
The Melbourne Bionics Company (TMBC) is reimagining sports recovery and medical compression therapy with innovative technology designed to overcome the limitations of traditional compression devices, which often require users to remain stationary for extended periods.
Combining human-centred design with advanced medical technology, TMBC is developing solutions that enhance physical performance and recovery while allowing users to maintain their mobility. Unlike conventional compression systems, TMBC’s technology activates in milliseconds, delivering compression synchronised with muscle movements for a near-imperceptible experience. With its compact design, lightweight construction and cost-efficient manufacturing, TMBC is positioning itself as a competitive alternative to conventional compression systems, with an initial focus on the Asia-Pacific elite sports market.
Founded by Samin Haque, NamTip Phongmekhin and Senoli Sandanayake, TMBC joined Cohort 10 of the MedTech Actuator Accelerator Australia with an early-stage prototype and a multidisciplinary team bringing together expertise in biomedical engineering, medicine, biotechnology and human-centred design.
The team's initial innovation was developed to address oedema through active compression, tackling a significant gap in the market for compact, wearable treatment solutions. Their work led to the development of a specialised garment capable of positioning sensors against the body with precision and consistency. This breakthrough has since opened new possibilities for monitoring muscle activity and understanding what happens beneath the surface of the body, creating opportunities beyond the technology's original application.
Joining the MedTech Actuator Accelerator
Throughout the Accelerator, TMBC made significant strides in strengthening its foundations for commercialisation and future growth. Key milestones included creating six jobs, securing $15,000 in capital and gaining acceptance into the CoLabs Impact Program. The team was also matched with an IGP Advisor to help navigate commercialisation pathways and identify strategic growth opportunities.
Alongside these achievements, TMBC refreshed its brand identity and trialled a new composite material production technique to support the next phase of product development.
With a growing team, advancing technology and a clear vision for the future, TMBC is building momentum towards bringing its next-generation wearable compression solutions to market, with the potential to transform how athletes and patients approach recovery.
Looking Ahead for TMBC
TMBC is focused on protecting its intellectual property through patent filings, establishing a scalable manufacturing process for its artificial muscles and building strategic partnerships with manufacturing and production suppliers. The company is also working towards launching its pilot program and opening registrations, while preparing for a $2 million pre-seed funding round planned for Q1 2026 to accelerate product development and commercialisation.
“The Accelerator offered us a place to test our assumptions, to challenge our ability to communicate value, and see around corners. Being that my team are first-time founders, we don't know what we don't know. Our current style, polish, and robustness in our business model and pitching are attributable to the Accelerator.” - Samin Haque – Co-founder and CEO
